Does insurance cover a cracked windshield? Usually yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage. Here’s how glass claims normally work, what you pay, and how to keep the cost down without cutting corners on safety.

Which coverage pays for glass

Windshield and window damage from rocks, falling objects, weather or vandalism is usually covered under the comprehensive part of an auto policy, not collision. Liability-only policies generally don’t cover your own glass. If the glass broke in an accident, it may go under collision instead.

What you pay

  • Replacement: you pay your comprehensive deductible and insurance pays the rest of the covered cost.
  • Chip repair: many insurers waive the deductible for repairs, so it often costs you nothing.
  • Full glass coverage: some policies add a glass option with a low or zero deductible. Check your declarations page or ask your agent.
  • Cost below the deductible: if the job costs less than your deductible, it’s usually better to pay out of pocket and not file a claim.

Will a glass claim raise my rates?

Comprehensive glass claims are generally treated differently from at-fault accident claims, and a single glass claim often has little or no effect. Every insurer is different, though, so ask yours if you’re concerned.

How a glass claim works

  1. Report the claim to your insurer, or let us start it with you.
  2. Have your policy number, the date and how the damage happened.
  3. Choose your shop. In most cases you can choose who does the work.
  4. We confirm coverage and the part, order the glass, and schedule mobile service at your home or work.
  5. You pay your deductible, if any. The insurer pays the rest.

How to save on windshield replacement without cutting corners

  • Fix chips early. A repair is a fraction of a replacement and is often covered with no deductible.
  • Ask about aftermarket glass. On many vehicles it’s safe, certified and costs less. See OEM vs aftermarket.
  • Compare your deductible to the price. Ask for the out-of-pocket price as well as the insurance route.
  • Use mobile service. No time off work, no towing or driving on damaged glass.
  • Don’t skip calibration. If your car has a windshield camera, calibration is part of a safe job. The cheapest quote that leaves it out is not a deal.
  • Watch out for “free windshield” pitches. A legitimate shop works with your actual coverage. Be wary of anyone offering cash or gifts to file a claim.

What makes one quote higher than another

Which window, ADAS calibration, OEM vs aftermarket, how far the glass has to come from, your vehicle’s age and type, and built-in features all change the price. We break it all down in what changes the price of windshield repair and replacement.
